
Essential Oils for Anti-cancer:
The following essential oils contain anticancer properties:
Cancer is the second largest single cause of death claiming over six million lives worldwide every year. As such plant essential oils are currently receiving renewed interest for their therapeutic anticancer properties. Over five hundred papers have been published on anticancer activity of essential oils. Over a hundred essential oils from more than twenty plant families have been tested on more than twenty types of cancers in last past ten years. In fact the effects of essential oils has been investigated on glioblastoma, melanoma, leukemia and oral cancers, as well as on bone, breast, cervix, colon, kidney, liver, lung, ovary, pancreas, prostate, and uterus cancers.
The following are a few essential oil bearing plants studied for anticancer potential:
- Frankincense (Boswellia sacra) extracts were shown to be cytotoxic to three breast cancer cell lines at varying concentrations
- Essential oil extracts from Amomum tsaoko exhibited cytotoxicity towards various human cancer cell lines, including liver cancer, cervical cancer, gastric adenocarcinoma, and prostate cancer.
- Salvia officinalis L. has been studied for it's potential in human melanoma cell lines
